Spoon Carving with Grain and Knot
by Zoe Jepson
As part of our ever-expanding Experiences programme, every month we welcome Sophie from Grain and Knot to host one of her hugely popular workshops in our Upstairs space. During the class Sophie carefully guides guests through the art of crafting their own spoon, creating a beautifully tactile, fully functional piece of kitchenware from reclaimed timber.

Sophie begins by giving a brief introduction to her work, and what you’ll be hoping to achieve in the class. Next, starting off with a rough-cut piece of reclaimed timber, Sophie shows you how to use the carving knife to get the basic shape for the spoon.

Once the basic shape has been achieved you’ll use a hook knife to carve out the centre of the spoon – taking care not to take too much!

When you’re happy with the shape of the spoon, you’ll use sandpaper to soften the edges and finish by applying homemade wood balm to protect your finished creation.

All topped off with a delicious lunch in the Carousel restaurant….
